After Surgery
Prescriptions
In Case of Emergency
After surgery, your progress will be closely monitored through regular visits by your NOSS surgeon or NOSS physician assistant.
If your procedure was done in a hospital, our medical team will conduct regular and thorough evaluations of your condition to determine when you are ready to be discharged. In some cases, discharge may be to a short term rehabilitation facility, or may involve home monitoring and support by a visiting nurse. Prescriptions for post-operative pain and instructions for follow-up office visits will be discussed with you prior to discharge. We will work closely with you to be sure that all plans are in place before you leave the hospital.
For many patients, physical therapy often plays an important role in post surgical recovery. Your doctor will work closely with you to develop the best recovery plan for your condition and your lifestyle.
Once you return home, your overall recovery time will depend largely on the type of procedure performed. You may experience bruising, swelling and discomfort for several days or weeks. In general, you can expect a return to regular activities between several weeks and several months after surgery.
Your first post-operative visit usually takes place within one or two weeks of discharge. At that time, a NOSS physician or PA will check the site of the surgery, and in some cases, remove sutures. Your doctor will also use that visit to assess your progress and determine whether additional follow-up visits will be needed. Plans for post-operative rehabilitation may also be discussed during this visit.
Prescription refill requests may be made during regular office hours. To phone in a refill request, please call our main office at 203-755-6677 and press "5" when prompted to make a selection. One of the NOSS doctors will review your request and, if approved, call or fax the refill order in to your preferred pharmacy. Please be sure to plan ahead, and to request your refill well before your supply of needed medications runs out.
Please note that certain controlled medications may not be ordered over the phone. For those substances, written prescriptions must be provided in person during an office visit.
Please call 911 or go directly to the nearest hospital if you are experiencing a true medical emergency.
For all other cases, a physician is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 203-755-6677. Our on-call physician will contact you as soon as possible to gather information, assess your condition and direct you to the best course of action for your individual situation.
