William F. Flynn, Jr., MD, ABOS

Dr. Flynn is a board certified and fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in joint reconstruction and sports medicine. He performs both simple and complex reconstructions of the hip, knee, and shoulder, including joint replacement and re-surfacing. Dr. Flynn also performs arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee, elbow, and ankle, as well as general orthopaedics. His clinical interests include metabolic bone disease, osteoporosis, and the impact of exercise and fitness on orthopaedic health.

Dr. Flynn works to educate patients about their conditions using language and concepts they can understand. In doing so, he believes that patient and doctor become partners in the healing process. Dr. Flynn tailors treatment plans to the specific needs and condition of each individual, and believes that both surgical and non-surgical options should be explored, depending on the specifics of each case. He helps patients build plans for managing their orthopaedic problems and for maximizing their overall fitness once their medical problems have been resolved.

Dr. Flynn was educated at Princeton University and Cornell University Medical College, where he received numerous awards for both teaching and academics. He continued his orthopaedic training at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He is the only Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education fellowship trained joint replacement surgeon in Greater Waterbury, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Flynn is well known for his research and publications, which include journal articles, orthopaedic text content, and presentations nationwide. He is a member of the teaching staff at the Yale University School of Medicine, on staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, and is the OR Director and Chief of Orthopaedics at Waterbury Hospital. Dr. Flynn is a member of the Connecticut State Medical Society’s Committee on Sports Medicine, and a team physician at several area high schools.
